Mamata Barui, 16, used her innovation and creativity to cultivate a garden to feed her family and empower herself.
Mamata hopes the surplus from her garden will generate enough money to delay an early marriage arranged by her parents.
Based on the idea that if girls are considered assets rather than extra mouths to feed, they might complete their education and break out of the cycle of child marriage and poverty, this pilot project was started by the Seattle, Washington-based nonprofit Landesa, and supported by the Nike Foundation.

Have you heard of Ban Bossy? It’s the new initiative from Lean In and the Girl Scouts that’s trying to ban “bossy” and similar words that are used to bring down girls that are ambitious, take risks, and speak up. By changing the way we treat girls who lead, hopefully our generation will someday see more women in leadership roles.

You can watch the 1:00 video with Beyonce, Jane Lynch, Condeleeza Rice, and Jennifer Garner here, or visit the Ban Bossy website
